IT Services

Primary activity of the IT Services of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering in Niš is provision of technical preconditions for work of scientific and teaching resources at the Faculty, networking infrastructure, internet and maintenance of server infrastructure and working units within the domain of the IT Services.

In last five years the networking infrastructure of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering increased several tenth times. Several kilometers of cables were stretched through the Faculty building. In 2005 Faculty had 6 management switches, and nowadays it has tenths of management switches such as: CISCO, 3 COM, Allied Telesyn, routers of CISCO brand latest generation, MicroTik, and other network equipment of lower class that is installed both in new and old building of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering. Beside active and passive network equipment, the Faculty owns network monitoring system of the last generation (SolarWinds 10) that provides complete insight of the situation at the Faculty network at any time.

Server infrastructure consists of several tenths of servers type Dell, servers type IBM and one cluster server type Sun Microsystems.

In order to provide work of teachers, the Center installed Microsoft e-mail server (Exchange server 2010). Beginning of 2009, migration from Exchange server 2007 to Exchange server 2010 was performed. This was done due to the fact that Serbia transferred to a new domain (.rs) and decision was made to transfer to the server of the last generation. Beside basic functions of receiving and sending e-mails, new server enables collaboration of resources, mutual meeting scheduling, and sending tasks through network. It provides also mobile technologies such as PUSH, which enables complete synchronization of cellular devices with calendar, mail, tasks that are on network. At the moment teacher receives e-mail on Faculty server, the message will be transferred to their cellular phone. This type of service is usually highly charged by the operators, but the Faculty teachers have it for free.

During the last three years, certain number of old servers was virtualized and they exist in Faculty servers as virtual machines at the platform VMWare ESX which is connected to our system for network monitoring (Picture 1).

Currently, final works for provision of single sign on (SSO) access to all network services are in progress, where the IT Services work on integration of the Student Information Portal, wireless Faculty network and e-mail system for students, together with the Microsoft Company, under the name Live@edu. It is foreseen that student using one username and password could access all relevant services at the Faculty, including Student Information Portal, which is under the competencies of the Student Parliament of the Faculty of Electronic in Niš.

IT Services center provided multiple platforms for electronic learning and currently works on their integration into one common faculty platform for electronic learning. The IT Services also provided platform for document management system (Share Point 2010). In future, this should facilitate communication between Faculty services and Faculty employees, and also the introduction of electronic signature is under the consideration, as one of the possibilities for signing the documents placed at the Document Management system. In order to perform the complete implementation in future, it is necessary to work more on business processes of the institution, since the technical preconditions are created, and platform installed.

Beside the wireless network provided for lower floors within the Faculty, the IT Services also provide wireless connection for employees who live in the settlement behind the Faculty. The settlement is completely covered with signal, as well as some parts in front of the Faculty, and the coverage diagram is shown in picture 2.

The IT Services is constantly working on service quality improvement and in the third quarter of 2011 in cooperation with the Computer Center of the University of Belgrade, it is planned to transfer into 10GB connection towards Belgrade and further to Hungary. Also, the IT Services work on the implementation of IPv6 protocol due to the narrowing of the address space that is currently available.

The IT Services is also in charge of the needs of Department of Students Affairs and Department of Material and Financial Affairs, as well as for all data and database on employees.
